Joan Porter, MFT
Marriage & Family Therapist
Joan Porter provides individual, premarital, couples, and marital counseling as well as affair and addiction recovery counseling. With over 20 years of experience, she supports clients in healing through change and personal growth. She offers a safe environment to explore emotional patterns that may be preventing clients from living up to their fullest potential.
Joan particularly enjoys helping couples and families maintain lasting relationships using a research-based approach. She is a Certified First Responder Counselor as well as a Certified Gottman Couples Therapist & Referral Network Approved Member. She has extensive experience as a Rover Therapist at the Art & Science of Love Workshops facilitated by Drs. John and Julie Gottman and has years of experience working with couples using live video sessions for long distance treatment.
She is trained in cognitive behavioral, emotion focused, somatic, transpersonal, and family systems therapy, but her orientation is psychodynamic. This method involves the transformation of often-unconscious beliefs and patterns about the self and others that can get in the way of forming satisfying relationships and functioning effectively in life.
Joan offers new resources to clients to deepen levels of meaning, connection, and vitality through insight, experience, and evidence-based practice. For clients dealing with past trauma, present pain, or current life changes – help is available.
Joan earned her master’s degree in clinical psychology from Antioch University in Santa Barbara after receiving her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from University of Washington in Seattle.
